I’d thought I’d be lonely without Wolf, but it seemed like I was busier than ever even though nothing I was doing had anything to do with work. Naomi came over every day, Noelle called regularly, and Tawny had come back so we’d hung out a couple of times. I’d been doing the research on the best cribs, car seats, and strollers, and making a list for Wolf and I to go through so we could register. Noelle and the other girls had already started talking about my baby shower, and it seemed like a never-ending cycle of plans and parties.

I’d never realized how caught up in surfing I was until recently. I truly did little else, even in the off-season. Whether I was competing, training, or promoting my brand, everything in my life up to this point had been centered around my career. It was a little jarring to realize that other people didn’t live that way. Other women with careers and businesses, like Juliet, took time out to do other things.

Friendship, romance, and shopping seemed to be at the top of that list. Tiff had four kids and ran a busy counseling practice, but always found time for her friends, the other wives and girlfriends on the team, and Zakk. Juliet was part owner of her family restaurant and had started her cupcake business, but seemed to be available for Vaughn, her friends, and her extensive family from what she’d said when we went to lunch.

Somehow, it felt like all these women had found balance while I’d been laser focused on one thing. Since Wolf and I had agreed to take things one day at a time with our relationship, I’d made a subconscious decision to do the same thing when it came to figuring out what came next for me once the baby was born. The plan had always been to go back to work, but I hadn’t given a lot of thought to the rest of it.

Like maintaining my relationship with Wolf.

Keeping up with these wonderful new friends I’d been making here in Fort Lauderdale.

Creating a home base somewhere I actually wanted to go home to in between competitions.

And yet, I was twenty-one weeks pregnant and still didn’t have a plan.

Not for Wolf, not for my career, and not even for myself as a mom.

I’d never paid much attention to the fact that I didn’t have a lot of close friends, but it was hard to ignore now that I had some. More than that, I had no idea what would happen when Wolf and I inevitably went our separate ways. I tried not to think about it, because the last month or so had been wonderful, but he wouldn’t be happy once I went back to work. I didn’t have a plan yet in that regard, but there was no universe where I never surfed again.

Was there?

That was the rub.

As I looked down at my slowly growing tummy, and thought about the baby inside of me, I was hit with a lot of disparate emotions.
